We kicked off April with our three-day Spring Break Camp! We had a camp packed full of squash, yoga, math exercises, some gardening and even got to take a nice hike to the Baylands nearby. Huge thanks to Sam Griffin, Olivia Pliam, Andreia Goncalves, and Nihal Verghese for making our Spring Break Camp possible! Shout out to Hansi and his kids Scarlet and Lorenz for helping out Richard with the squash coaching—they were so helpful and our students loved playing with new kids! They all seemed to have a great time and were excited especially to have some more court time. It was wonderful seeing them so motivated to improve their squash game after the Spring Spectacular Fundraiser Tournament!
April 22nd was Earth Day and to celebrate, we planted our seedlings from their mini greenhouses into the garden boxes so keep your eyes peeled for some cilantro, arugula, marigolds and zinnias! After we did our gardening and squash, we went in for our art class with Cathy and made lovely garden flags—come check them out in the classroom sometime!
In tutor news, we have some new tutors who joined the team—welcome, Kaylee Sumida, Eric Dunn, Andy Guo, Ann Guo, Sanah Syed and Richa Patnam. They have been settling in great and we are so grateful for the support they provide our students. If you’re interested in joining our tutoring team, we run tutoring sessions Mon/Tues (4:45-6:00) and Fri (3:30-4:45). Reach out to alana@squash.zone any time!
We are also very excited to announce the TRACK Star Summer Camp Scholarship! Thanks to the Bhagwati Family, two Squash on Track students will be selected to attend a special summer camp this summer! The recipients will be selected based on our TRACK Values (Teamwork, Respect, Appreciation, Communication and Kindness) and who most consistently displays these values. This is a very exciting opportunity for the students and very generous offer from the Bhagwatis. Stay tuned to see who are selected as the recipients!
More exciting news! One of our students, Pablo Constanza-Rodas has been selected to receive the Marine Science Institute Summer Camp Scholarship! Pablo was recommended to this because he has been taking more and more initiative at Squash on Track and has demonstrated strong growth in his communication and listening skills. We are so excited for Pablo to embark on a two-week summer program that provides hands-on learning—he’ll get to do on-site research, go out on the bay on a ship and go on field trips. Can’t wait for Pablo to come back in the fall and teach us about some marine science!
Community Boost: Do you know any high schoolers or recent graduates who needs something to do this summer? We have opened applications for our Summer Program Lead position! We are looking for young leaders to become a part of our summer camp to make this summer magical for our students! Summer camp is July 11th-22nd! This is a wonderful opportunity for young adults to develop their professional skills while also helping out students in need. Please check out the flyers around the club and contact alana@squash.zone for more information. No prior work with kids necessary, just a positive attitude and willingness to learn! We hope you’ll recommend our program to your circle.
