February: Connecting with Ourselves

Can you believe it’s already March!? We had a fantastic February at Squash on Track and are looking forward to a busy March!

Art with Cathy!

This month we started an art class series with a wonderful Squash on Track supporter and Squash Zone member, Cathy Gregory! Cathy comes in every other Friday to lead art classes based around life science and has been teaching them about trees. The students explored the tree anatomy and looked at the various resources that help trees grow and how different access to those resources can alter how a tree grows. The kids were full of questions and got really creative when making their trees. Check out some of the pictures of their trees that feature roots, mycelium and fungi. They also created cross-sections of trees that explore tree age and growth.

Check out that healthy soil, full of mycelium and fungi!

We also did our first Red Star Award Challenges on the squash courts! Putting their skills to a test, they had to complete various challenges such as doing a 10 shot rally, serving from both sides at least four times, naming all the court lines, and more. The students did great and will be working on Bronze, Silver and Gold Stars in the upcoming months.

Richard explaining the challenges

As a part of our Fridays, we took this month to connect with ourselves and explore our identities. We talked about the identities we can see and identities that we cannot see behind a person without getting to know them. We talked about culture, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, passions, religion and more! The students then created identity portraits for themselves. The portraits were filled with wonderful symbols representing the various elements of their identities and each presented our portraits to the class. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to get to know one another a bit better, including our tutors as well!

GRATITUDE FOR EVAN MICHALIC!

After getting involved with our January community service event, Evan worked with his mom, Brenda, to organize a book drive at his school for Squash on Track. We are so grateful for his efforts to supply our classroom with more books! Thank you so much for the Michalic family.

MARCH Announcments

We will be having our Spring Spectacular Tournament Fundraiser on March 25th and 26th. The funds raised will go towards putting on our first summer camp program! This summer we are excited to create a program that prioritizes experiential and project-based learning to engage our students in critical thinking.  Very excited to have our teams compete in squash and fundraising. If you are around, stop in to cheer on some friends and see our students play!

If you’re unable to come to the Squash on Track Fundraiser but would like to donate, you can do so on our Spring Spectacular Fundraiser Campaign Page here.

Finally!
Track Star of the Month was Juan D Dios Urbina! Juan worked really hard this month on his listening skills and being extra helpful to Alana and Richard. He has also been attending the Saturday Developmental clinics and shows dedication to becoming a stronger, more respectful squash player. Great job, Juan!
